Cancer Registry Department
Northern Westchester Hospital maintains an approved Comprehensive Community Hospital Cancer Program and Cancer Registry and has long been recognized as one of the region’s premier health care providers, offering state-of-the-art cancer care in a nurturing community setting. Our cancer program currently holds the Commission on Cancer’s accreditation with Commendation, and has been accredited since 1971.
The Cancer Registry at Northern Westchester Hospital is an integral part of the hospital’s cancer program. It maintains a complete profile of all types of cancer diagnosed and treated at this facility since 1993. The Cancer Registry serves as an information collection and dissemination system designed specifically for cancer. Our database provides the medical staff with information for evaluation of end results and treatments. It also serves as a source of information to assist in program planning and resource allocation. Cancer Registry data is reported to the NYS Cancer Registry, the Commission on Cancer’s National Cancer Data Base, as well as providing information for grants, research, clinical trials, continuing education seminars, and cancer conferences at Northern Westchester Hospital.
The Cancer Registry is staffed with data management experts, who also provide lifetime annual surveillance of patients, tracking progress, disease status, quality of survival, recurrence, and subsequent treatment. Over 6,650 patients are followed with an average current follow-up rate of 95%. The goal is to serve our patients by reminding and encouraging them to continue routine medical examinations, thereby increasing the chances for early detection of recurrent disease or secondary malignancies. The Cancer Committee is responsible to monitor and evaluate the activities of the Cancer Registry, with quality assurance of data maintained with rotating monthly physician review.
