Common Kidney Cancers: RCC and UCC
The two most common types of kidney cancers are renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and urothelial cell cancer (UCC). RCC, the most common kidney tumor, is a cancer of the kidney parenchyma (or solid tissue portion), may occur as one of several distinct cell types, and can have a familial, or genetic, origin. Because symptoms (such as blood in the urine or flank pain) mainly occur in advanced stages, RCC is most commonly detected during a radiographic evaluation of an unrelated medical problem.
UCC is a cancer of the inner lining of the kidney. This is the same type of cancer that occurs within the bladder. The most common association with UCC is cigarette smoking. The standard kidney cancer treatment, either RCC or UCC, remains surgery. Our goals are to cure the cancer and preserve as much normal functioning kidney as possible, as well as to have our patients return to normal activities as soon as possible.
